  • 20 Dec, 1861: Union forces win minor engagements at Dranesville, VA (Balls Bluff Park).

  • 8 Nov, 1861: The USS San Jacinto stops British steamer Trent and forcibly removes Confederate commissioners James Mason and John Slidell (Balls Bluff Park).

  • 21 Oct, 1861: The Battle of Balls Bluff; Confederate forces defeat a Union raiding party near Leesburg, VA after they cross the Potomac. Among the dead are Col. Edward D Baker, a US Senator  (Balls Bluff Park).

  • 9 Oct, 1861: The Battle of Santa Rosa Island; confederate troops unsuccessfully attack Fort Pickens, Pensacola, FL (Balls Bluff Park).

  • 10 Aug, 1861: The Battle of Wilson’s Creek, Missouri; Confederate forces defeat Union forces (Balls Bluff Park).

  • 25 Jul, 1861: POTUS Lincoln appoints George B. McClellan to command the Departments of NE Virginia and Washington (later the Army of the Potomac) (Balls Bluff Park).
