8 Nov, 1861: The USS San Jacinto stops British steamer Trent and forcibly removes Confederate commissioners James Mason and John Slidell (Balls Bluff Park).
21 Oct, 1861: The Battle of Balls Bluff; Confederate forces defeat a Union raiding party near Leesburg, VA after they cross the Potomac. Among the dead are Col. Edward D Baker, a US Senator (Balls Bluff Park).
