Chronology
21 Jul, 1831: Leopold is installed as Belgium’s first King, despite Dutch military victories against Belgium in the Ten Days Campaign (Rijksmuseum).
1830-1831: The Belgian Revolution; the southern provinces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands rebel against King William I and proclaim their province, Belgium, an independent country. Following initial skirmishes, the Dutch army retreats in autumn, 1830, but returns on a ‘Ten Days’ campaign the following summer. Despite the campaigns military wins, Leopold is installed as Belgium’s first king (Rijksmuseum).
Summer, 1831: The ‘Ten Days’ Campaign; Dutch Prince Frederik leads Dutch forces against Belgian rebels (Rijksmuseum).
12 Jan, 1807: A ship laden with 37 tons of gunpowder explodes in the center of Leiden, Netherlands, killing 150 people and destroying many houses (Rijksmuseum).
Jun, 1667: The Battle of Medway; a Dutch naval force led by De Ruyter defeats English naval forces. De Ruyter takes the English flagship, the Royal Charles, back to the Netherlands as war booty (Rijksmuseum).
